Q-ties take the test: the turbo among the cable ties

With HellermannTyton Q-ties, cables can be bundled and fixed much more quickly than with traditional cable ties. And they are more versatile. These were the findings of a test conducted by DEKRA, one of the world's leading auditing companies. The test showed that Q-ties save more than a quarter of the normal processing time. Participants were electricians from industrial and craft businesses.

A professional electrician knows from experience how long it takes for the installation of cable ties on a wire harness. Work in confined spaces, overhead or with limited visibility is particularly time-consuming. Concentration and patience are required. These are the work situations in which the Q-ties shows there strengths.

What makes the Q-ties so much faster and more practical to use? It’s the open head of the cable ties that does it. Cable ties with a conventional head design require the tail to be threaded through an opening in the head. After that, a change of hands is needed before the binder can be tightened. In contrast, the Q-ties have a large, ergonomically designed tail that is easy to push into the open-lock head from above prior to tightening. Changing hands or tricky threading are no longer an issue.

“Users no longer have to reach around the cables to attach the cable tie. One single operation is all it takes. After a brief learning period, our testers were quickly able to tie a cable harness without seeing it. With a standard cable tie this would have been a real challenge," says Thomas Tyll.

The expert testers were impressed. All of them managed to work better and faster with the Q-ties. One of the installers judged that especially in mass production, such as in cable assembly and in blind applications, the Q-ties were distinctly superior to standard cable ties. Another saw significant time savings in operations wearing gloves. A tester of a large installation company came to the conclusion: "The Q-ties are great and I want to use them."

"We wanted to carry out the test within the context of a realistic setting. The result should be accountable and transparent. Therefore, we had commissioned DEKRA to accompany the test as a neutral and professional observer”, explains Thomas Tyll, Head of Product Management at HellermannTyton.

The cable tie specialists of HellermannTyton did not make it easy for the testers. A realistic and challenging test procedure replicated the participants’ actual working conditions as closely as possible.
This included installing overhead, limited view, under time pressure - and all under the watchful eye of an examiner of DEKRA.

The task was to attach a cable with thirteen cable ties by hand at marked points on a cable tray. There were five test runs for each type of cable tie and the time for the binding was recorded by the examiner.
Installing cable ties with gloved hands and in a blind box were additionally tested. These tests were not certified by DEKRA.
